Germinating an Avocado!

I love growing stuff. Last year I had a bunch of herbs I planted in my back yard, and I will do all that again when March comes around. But for the time being I have started on an avocado seed!

When the seed is removed from the avocado, it is very moist and soft. You’re going to wanna peel off the outer skin of the seed! This does not hurt the seed or the embryo inside, it just helps the root to grow out and the seed to sprout.

Take three toothpicks, penetrate the toothpicks into the seed. DON’T WORRY. YOU WON’T KILL THE SEED. You need the toothpicks so you can suspend the seed in some water as you can see in the pictures.

Fill a glass/jar (I used an old coffee container) with water and place your seed into it. The water should submerge almost 1/2 the seed, or more. keep it in a sunny spot :) and make sure you add water when you need to.

ALOT of people need to wait 2 months just for the root to come out. Luckily… my seed was already pretty advanced when I bought the avocado. It actually split open on the bottom and a root started to peep out in about 5 days, so there was probably already an embryo inside that was ready.

Sometimes people wait to transfer their seed into soil once the seedling(young plant) sprouts from the seed, but I’m going to go ahead and transfer it into soil as soon as I can. I could leave it in water, but I really want to give it nutrients to advance it’s growth.

When I transfer my seed, I’ll make a post about it :)
